Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognize, accept, and celebrate those differences.
~ Audre Lorde

Mission:
The Mission of the Plymouth Public Schools is to be a progressive school district where all students receive a high quality education in a supportive environment. Where students are inspired to become the leaders of tomorrow.

Vision:
In partnership with our community, the Vision of the Plymouth Public Schools is to ensure that our students receive a well-rounded, high-quality education in a safe, accepting and inclusive environment. We are committed to empowering all students to become critical thinkers, problem solvers, creators and innovators who advocate for themselves, their community, our nation, and the world.

Role:
The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator is responsible for guiding efforts and creating opportunities to define, assess, and promote diversity, equity and inclusion, educational and employment opportunities, and antiracist education. The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Coordinator works in collaboration with both of the Assistant Superintendents and Curriculum Directors on curriculum initiatives and professional development, as well as staff recruitment, hiring, and retention initiatives.

What is Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Belonging?

  • Diversity

    • The presence of differences that may include race, color, religion or creed, national origin or ancestry, sex orientation, gender, age, ability, genetic information, or citizenship. These are populations that have typically been and continue to be underrepresented and marginalized within society.

  • Equity

    • Refers to fairness and justice and differs from equality. Equality means providing the same to all, but equity means recognizing that we do not all start from the same place and must acknowledge and make adjustments to imbalances. The process is ongoing and ever changing, which is why we must identify, address and remove intentional and unintentional barriers arising from bias or systemic structures.

  • Inclusion

    • The practice or policy of providing equal access to opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded or marginalized, such as those who have physical or mental disabilities and members of other minority groups.

  • Belonging

    • The feeling of being comfortable and accepted as a member of a group, and having a good relationship with the other members of the group because they welcome you and accept you.

Diversity Committee

The district’s goal to graduate confident, critical thinkers, productive and creative lifelong learners, and socially responsible, engaged citizens would be impossible to fulfill without a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In 2020, the district established the Plymouth Public Schools Diversity Committee to identify focus areas of equitable change and to actively work towards our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Plymouth Public Schools is committed to creating an inclusive and unbiased community in which all individuals are free to engage, learn, and succeed as their authentic selves in an atmosphere of mutual respect and civility, regardless of race and ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, class, religion, or any other aspect of their identity.
