For the past three years, all elementary schools in Plymouth have participated in the βOne District, One Author" program, based on One Book, One School. Designed as a way to bring all of the elementary schools together in celebration of reading and writing, Dr. White and Mrs. Mulvaney arrange events and activities during the month of March, culminating in opportunities for students to hear directly from the authors. Schools are provided with sets of books to ensure that classes are able to read their stories and learn more about them prior to the visits. This year, we were able to bring TWO authors to our students and teachers through virtual presentations.
Lauren Tarshis spoke to all students in Grades 3-5. Author of the βI Survivedβ series, Ms. Tarshis shared her research and writing process, which includes taking many trips to learn more about the real-life places and events of her historical fiction stories! Recently, Ms. Tarshis traveled to Botswana, Africa in preparation for her upcoming book, I Survived the Night of the Lions. Students were fascinated by the incredible photographs from her trip and her experiences driving through the Okavango Delta. They even got a βsneak peekβ reading of the first chapter! Finally, Ms. Tarshis shared a personal story of her difficulties learning to read as a child and how she persevered and became a bestselling author.
For our students in Grades K-2, author and illustrator Grace Lin presented a lively and interactive session, complete with a draw-along and βPop Quiz Questions!β Students learned how to draw a bunny, and they heard Ms. Lin read her book, A Big Mooncake for Little Star. Students and teachers loved hearing how many of her stories are inspired by experiences in her own life, especially around family customs and traditions. Ms. Lin taught students more about her writing and drawing process and how a book becomes published. They even got to βmeetβ her daughter and their chickens!
Both authors were fabulous speakers who inspired our students to read, write, draw, and live out their dreams. Special thanks to the Plymouth Education Foundation and the Plymouth Kiwanis Club for their financial support of this program. We are grateful to have wonderful community partners and could not do this without them!
