Freshman Academy

Welcome

Freshman year in high school is a time of excitement and expectation. It is a time when young people discover who they are and more importantly, who they can become. The transition from middle school to high school is a big step in a young person’s life. This transition is supported by our freshman academy model. The Freshman Academy at Plymouth South creates a team approach that shapes a common purpose toward developing a sense of community and a strong commitment to student achievement. Ninth graders are placed on teams for the four content areas. The goal is to assist incoming ninth graders in adjusting to high school standards, expectations, and routines.

The team model is developed around the concept of a Small Learning Community. It consists of interdisciplinary teams of English, Math, Science, and History. Academic and technical students are grouped into one of four teams. Teaming personalizes education by creating a closer student to staff relationship. Each team consists of approximately 100 students. An administrator and two guidance counselors are assigned specifically to the teams. Teachers share a common planning time and communicate regularly with parents and guardians.

Below are some tips for succeeding in not only the freshman academy but in high school in general. Please take time to read and reflect on these ideas. It is my sincere hope that your child will have a positive experience at PSHS. Everyone at Plymouth South is excited about the upcoming school year and welcoming our incoming freshman. Parents, please encourage your child to study hard, be positive, take advantage of all PSHS has to offer and to strive for excellence in everything they do as excellence is not an act, it is a habit.
